it's actually funny that you bring that up.. i just hopped a flight from sacramento to vegas and during the wait in the airport (about an hour) and the flight (again.. about an hour) i deleted 900+ tracks from my computer. i originally had 2,300 tracks and have been wanting to do a cleanup.. so now i'm just hovering around 1,400 tracks..

i basically just have them organized by bpm and genre. i keep it pretty vague..

electronic - which i put all the electro stuff in and it's pretty much encompasses everything that doesnt fit into any of the other categories

big room - stuff like swedish house mafia

baltimore - this genre no longer exists on my computer as i deleted every one of the tracks

techno - self explanatory

house - see above

bassline house

then i have a crate called 'recent heat' which i put stuff into before a gig that i know i definitely want to drop. i used to have a bunch of 80s and hip hop on my computer but got rid of all of that as well save for a few tracks.

haha im jealous you get to fly around spinning everywhere...

yeah i've been using serato for awhile now i just miss record sleeves, each unique picture went along with each unique track... i miss that

do you just use itunes to house your music or an external or somethin?

im still tryin to figure out how i wanna keep all my music together... im still convinced record crates were the best organizational tool

ps thanks for responding... if i was in your posistion i'd be doin this same thing for my fans...BIG props...

i have a personal laptop and a performance (strictly dj'ing) laptop.

and i have a couple of baltimore tracks that i did save only i just have them listed under the vague "electronic" genre. im trying to not be overwhelmed with tracks.. when you arent playing by a set list it makes it really hard to just browse for things to play when there are literally thousands of songs to pick from.

no really. i deleted them.. a big part of the reason i dont have a lot of them is that it is really hard to get good mp3s.. the quality of a lot of them are bad and so i suppose i've just not wanted to hassle with tracking down good versions. playing on bigger systems you really hear a difference with the bitrates moreso than a tiny club system..

that and ive stayed pretty clear of blogs. i'll check them out to find out whats hot then go on beatport and get a wav version and make my own edits. problem with baltimore tracks are most of them arent sample cleared so they cant be sold on beatport (which trickles down to bad quality versions floating around on blogs).

sucks too. i heard a really good scottie b track last night in germany that i want but i wont be able to find a wav file of it.

ive almost stopped reading blogs...i usually just spend an hour or two trying to find something interesting on beatport

anyway youve also gotta consider the sources and samples for most original bmore tracks are usally already somewhat low quality.

you only use wavs now or what?

im doing more edits with the stuff i play.. and wav files are better suited for that purpose.. no sense converting a mp3 to a wav then back to an mp3.

Do you stick to strictly 320 kbs mp3s?

Also, why isn't flac used more? Just too big?

Just remember to breathe man

You'd think if size was the only deterrent that the pros would outweigh the cons. A TB external HD is ~200 bucks. Which in comparison to how much people spend on other shit for quality enhancement isn't much.

It's a completely lossless format with more than obvious quality advantages. I'm probably not seeing something - but that's why I'm asking, what is it that keep DJ's from using FLAC?
