daniel, is it true that if you're the first dj of a night, you cant play too dancey of stuff 'cause no one is yet ready to dance? me and my friend have our first dj gig on april 5th and i need some pointers as to what type of music to play, since we are on first.

daniel may have more to add, but i'd say you want to shy away from playing banger after banger. there's nothing worse than a dj blairing hard as nails tracks to an empty club. your best bet is to play fun stuff, include tunes that people will recognize, and tunes that'll set up the next dj nicely. you're not the headliner, you're the opener. the better you make the headliner look and the more you add to the flow of the night, the more likely you are to get booked again. over time you'll get better time slots where you can start to step it up.

thanks, jo'b! i didnt know you were posting on this board, sorry for leaving you out of my question. i should've worded it as "la riots, ..."

yeah, i'm definitely not gonna play many bangers. i remember once i saw Sluttt play, and they were just playing banger after banger after banger!! i mean, they were probably the sickest of bangers i'd ever heard, but it just got obnoxious, 'cause it was this constant banger-ness, with no kind of variation. plus, the club was almost empty to begin with, so it was really kinda crappy.

how do you guys feel about coming to El Paso, and than not too long after Laz is going to juarez, alot of great acts are coming down here, why didn't you guys decide to play on the other side of the border where the electro house scene is stronger, cuz on the el paso side it's not gonna be as great

we dont handle our bookings. everything is handled through AM ONLY. if an offer came through and it was agreeable then it wouldve been approved. another factor is what we're doing around that. that weekend we do boston to el paso to atlanta for a thurs fri sat string of dates.. going south of the border wouldve been good but the sat gig was already given to atlanta.

in other news winter music conference is amazing! i just walked across the street and saw boys noize kill it and then digitalism come on right after and do it again!

yea, try to ease your way into it. if you're opening your job is to slowly get people to move from the bar towards the dance floor. save the dirty stuff for late in the night. it's not always fun opening, but it's definitely harder to get things going then it is to take over mid-party.
unless you're playing for a band, then by all means kill it. if i ever play before/between bands, i play like 1 softish song to get things going, and then straight into heavy stuff.

I know this is kind of a douchebaggy question but I was wondering, is there any guestlist oppurtunities for that show, cuz it'd be more than awesome to shoot the shit with you man, I mean I've talked to you on here a few times, and you sent me those remixes, which have been killing the dancefloors I've been playing em on, but It'd be fucking 10 times better to meet you guys man

oh, and this also a kind of strange question, but there's this place called Chicos Tacos, it's an El Paso landmark, there's tons all around the city, my friends, and myself, want to buy you a single or a double or whatever you guys want there, but if you come down to EP you have to eat there

sorry didnt check the board before ultra so i didnt get your message.

as far as the guest list for our gigs.. if it's not a gig in a place where we have tons of friends just message us a day or two in advance on myspace and we will put you on the list.. it must be done on myspace and it must include that you are a member of the message board (please provide your screen name).

(i mean.. LA, NYC, SF, Chicago etc. etc. we have personal friends that come out to our gigs that we list so those places are harder to list board members.. anything else is fair game!)

honestly i dont have my decks even set up at my house any more. outside of when i have to lug them out to record a mix i just flat out don't mix at home. im on the road enough and that's when i basically get my 'practice' in..

so it just really takes knowing your tracks and knowing what will work in your head.. you should be able to know what tracks go with what and what are in key by just imagining the mix in your head.

ive tryed mixed in key...i dunno, i wouldnt say its worth it...ive been into electronic music for less than a year, ive been trying my hand a djing for even less than that and i can tell what mixes together, and shit, i mixed some yuksek remix that was in like a way different key than the other track and it sounded fucking awesome

its good for finding cool song combinations though
