just wondering what inputs you all have on mp3 to wav converters. have a preference?

I'm confused about this too. But I use RazorLame if I ever want to encode to .wav real quick.

after much of my own personal debate; i noticed i like the sound alot better of a .wav than a 320 mp3. its has more dimension i think. so now im left with a few .wavs and shit load of 320 mp3. been searching online for any good converters but i havent actually converted anything yet. wavs just sound bigger/wider to me. so in the end i just wanted to see what some of you use [if any].

you cannot convert mp3 to wav and increase sound quality. it is with good reason that you thought wav sounded better; wav is lossless while mp3 is lossy! furthermore, if you do want lossless, you would do better to go with FLAC, the file sizes are somewhat smaller. to be honest wav is actually really outdated; there is hardly any reason to use it any more...the only reason i ever even have wav files is when i render files from ableton, thats about it though.

That's up to you homie. Don't be scared to have it take you a year. All the stuff you've done on this track is learning... eventually you'll just know when a song is done. When it's good enough and you're happy with it.

one of my friends is selling me his copy of Pro Tools 7 with mbox (fuck yes!) for $150

I'm used to using ableton, are there any things I should know beforehand so I can get a good start with the program.

Does it take VSTs?

Does it have ReWire?

For those experienced with both Ableton and ProTools, are there any big differences between the layouts that I should be aware of?

/

is this a good idea, should I just stick with ableton

stick with ableton unless you are planning to record live instruments. it can't use vsts directly, but you can convert them to the necessary format with the "VST to AU adapter" program.

ah, I was excited at first since it is more or less the industry standard but I rarely record live instruments and I finally have almost enough to buy a legal copy of Ableton suite with an educational discount

I think pro tools uses RTAS. But ya I would stick with Ableton and use the mbox as a sound card. $150 is a good buy!
