Here is an incredible thread from dubstepforum where Reso (dubstep producer and DJ) answers production question in great detail. He even includes screenshots of his arrangements and midi programming, it's a great read.

I remember at one point on this thread someone had a picture to aid in mixing down showing the areas on a spectrum monitor where its a good idea to eq certain tracks, bass, kick, hi-hat etc.

I've been working on a lot of stuff lately and I've been trying to get it to the point where if I could mix it with other (professionally produced) tracks and I don't need to do a bunch of EQing on the spot to make the track I made not sound out of place.

Alright, I need some help guys, this is a big decision for me.

I've decided to go with a MacBook Pro and, because it is affordable, Reason 3. I also have a really great external hard drive in mind as well.

Anything else I should get, or be aware of? This is going to be strictly 'production only' laptop.

A friend of mine who now has Reason 4 game me his copy of Reason 3. So, I got a $500 program for free. That is why I decided to not get a cheap laptop and get a MacBook Pro.

I'm hoping to either upgrade to Pro Tools or Reason 5 after I get used to the program and the laptop overall. I've been floating around different programs for years, I'm still trying to decide which I like best.

You are obsessed with her.

At the moment I have a poster of Hendrix @ Woodstock, and Rush in the studio for the album Permanent Waves.

This is gonna sound odd... but does anybody have any tips of creating WTF? sounds... or sample packs that have a few good ones.

By WTF sounds i mean those sounds that you cant place or describe as a "saw" or "square"... like the hook at the end of each bar in TWR's track schizophrenia or like that weird vocal hook in Towel swinger or those "dieing dinosaur" sounds in the intro of fake bloods mars... those types of sounds.

Any tips.... modulation settings to effects chains to resampling processes... would be awesome.

Well I would try to find the most random samples you can find and chop them up / reverse / distort / whatever.

I think that 'dying dinosaur sound is a sample. Not certain thought but it sounds like some kinda animal sound.

I recently loaded up a sample of a baby crying added reverb and pitch shifted it then bounced it. Chopped it up and found some interesting loops / percussion sounds out of it. It sounded pretty cool.
