I just wanna know how to make a song without the instruments clashing together making it sound ugly. I don't know how to make the sound run smoothly.

I was recently listening to Phantom pt. II, and Justice manages to create a song that is 80% distorted sound, while still making it run smoothly without instruments interfering with each other.

I need to master this.

Hey this is my first post, I hope you can help me im just learning with all this, and this seems to be a pretty good resource. In virtual dj you can cut the loops from 16 to 8 to 4 etc and gradually get that build up, know what I mean? Kind of like in crescendolls. Anway if anybody catched on, i'd like to know if theres anyway to do this in ableton smoothly, im kinda struglling. Thanks any feedbacks appreciated

uh, drag the song into arrange view and actually chop it up?

I'm guessing he meant live? Beat repeat might give you the effect you're looking for. I have pretty much no knowledge on Ableton though.

Greetings all-this is my first post and I've been lurking through this particular thread and I've seen a lot of questions about re-creating sounds and purchasing/investing/researching gear. However, I don't see a lot of questions about song writing or song structure.

Does anyone have any good basic tips for the form or composition of electronic/dance songs?

compose in octaves (bass g1 and lead g3) and use a 4/4 beat between 120 to 130 bpm.

pretty much thats it for dance music. everything else from there is gravy.

everytime i change the Org. BPM of a track in clip view in ableton and save, it always goes back to the initial BPM when i open the live set again. does anybody know why this happens?

it only seems to happen on Drum Rack too

I was more so implying form.
A sections, B sections, etc.

I'm already acclimated with the said characteristics of dance/house/etc. but the form of said genres has always baffled me because there's no real common formula-like with blues there being a certain form/most jazz/Indian ragas.

I guess I'm just asking for opinions on writing and how you personally choose to compose/add form.

It usually depends on the song
Intro, A, B, A, C (Breakdown), A, Outro would be a standard form for me, but I just go by what I think the song needs (like more cowbell) If I come up with another sweet funk bass riff then I'll cram in another section.

EDIT: It's funny that I said that cause I just opened a song that was A, B,C, D so far

just listen to a straight up house track for the structure.

Easy to understand one is Face to Face by Daft Punk or Music Sounds Better With You by Stardust.

almost all house songs can be broken into 32 bar sections

intro verse chorus buildup verse chorus outro

honestly you dont need a verse and chorus just a signifigant change every 32 bars

this isnt really for specific house music but this write up is a pretty good starting point on how to build a song.

http://tarekith.com/assets/arranging.html

that site has a lot of good ableton tutorials.
