sure, it was way too simple but I still had a lot of options, I could sample through my F keys and use the mouse and keyboard at the same time so I could do cool stuff with effects and crossfading.....it isn't as 'ghetto' as it sounds. If you try hard enough, you can do some interesting stuff...

Haha!
I DJed a party using dual monitors and youtube. One of the hardest and most rewarding things i've done to date. haha

I've toyed with the idea of learning how to wire midi controllers and using some little kids' toy as a chasis.

I wonder if you could do that with a modified monome kit

No way!!! You can use one button to fire each track and a nob to scroll up and down vertically for each row..I can see an increase in error..an accidental fire maybe or something! good tip

Ableton 7 DJ here; gonna buy a mixer of some sort.

I don't warp beforehand as a rule because I warp while mixing. Is this AWFUL AWFUL practice or just harder work.

Also how the fuck do I get a serial number for ableton 7; I don't want 8 I prefer 7's warp interface. What do i do to get a serial number to complete the demo?

Thought I would put something down on this as I have always used my UC-33 for everything although in the process broke my trackpad on my mac launching tracks.. Luckily then the Novation Launchpad has arrived and is now compatible with my Ableton 7 so I know use the launchpad for launching tracks, loops and samples plus to turn on/off effects on individual tracks. then my UC-33 to control the effects, EQ's and to generally mix. This is done using a bus powered usb to 4 usb extension then my audio interface runs from the other usb on the laptop as if I run it all from the extension the bus power is not enough to support it and something always ends up powering down during being played.

Hope this makes sense.

like you want to buy ableton 7? maybe check ebay. you can even buy used copies of ableton, the previous user just has to convert their serial number to your account.

Bringing back this thread

Anywho, I have been looking into gettin some midi controllers to Dj with and have had the UC33 in my head for a while. I saw a youtube video (below) with someone doing a little mix with it and to me it seems like it works well in ableton IF you have a multiple channels of different parts of the song (kick, snare, bass, pads, etc).

So what are other layouts to DJ with a UC33 that makes it effective? How does Felix have it laid out?

i am a pretty big fan of the ol' uc33. i make 4 audio channels with EQ assigned to knobs as well as pan amount+rate. also have reverb dry wet on knobs, a few sliders dedicated to reverb decay time. bpm on a slider, master volume on a slider. buttons to control beat repeat, rate for beat repeat is on a few knobs. i also mess around with a flanger occasionally, and a bit of a bit crush effect. all volumes on sliders. i've been trying to use some of the buttons to scroll and move around but i always just go back to mouse for ease. i am grabbing a novation launch pad soon for the clip launch matrix. i chop tracks up a lot but it isn't always necessary. the essential thing i like about ableton is the ability to make it more your own. people rag on ableton djs but i have found myself doing some very technical shit that would not be possible on turn tables. it takes a lot of planning and work to put on a good ableton set. i don't know feezy's layout but then again i don't know anybodies, i have designed my own setup and sure it is similar in some ways but the beauty in midi controllers is the freedom. you love america don't you? well, a uc-33 is the way to go

kind of a jumble run on there but might give you an idea.

Yea definitely adds a little insight. I plan on practicing more with Traktor once I get some gear, however down the road someday when I can do my tracks I will probably switch to ableton since it seems so free once you can separate the bits of your song across different scenes.

If I get a mixer-like controller I might go with full effects UC-33 where each column would be a different effect. Each knob would control a different parameter and the slider could do the dry/wet. Doesnt sound like a bad idea.... FUCK sounds like a great idea haha

Why don't you warp beforehand? Is there some creative reason why? I know you can re-regiment songs in interesting ways by warping them oddly.
