So Felix, when it comes to production (non-music making techniques), what qualities of the song are you most concerned about? Lets say you you got a sweet bass and drums, gettin the song together... then what do you make sure you edit as you go?

tutorials on youtube
but your probably way too busy for that

I've been thinking about this actually. What kind of things would you like to see if I did a video tutorial? Like a specific skill in general, or just a breakdown of a song? Anyone else chime in if they think this is a good idea, and/or if they have any thoughts on what would make it beneficial to you guys...

Can you re-word this, haha not too sure what exactly you're asking...

how long do you think the ideal breakdown/build is?

like how many beats?

128?

also, is it best to always work in the multiples of 4 that way?

haha, just some structure questions i guess, but I'd like to know ur opinion since ur big on the "techno" sound like I am.

I am also curious about this. Do you have a typical starter set up with music creating, as in do you have a simple guideline that you follow to start with? Of course certain songs would deviate, but are initially based off this design.

You could make a youtube clip off of this, like follow along how you start a song. How you would get some sounds, etc. You wouldnt need to give away any secrets in the video, rather show how its done. I know you use reason so it could also incorporate reason type tutorial with what you use.

Lets see... what I am trying to get at lets say you have music layed out, then what is your next step to mastering it yourself?

It's in multiples. And think about it... It's that way because it has to be. because if it doesn't it doesn't "feel" right. Michael Jackson when asked how he made those amazing songs for thriller replied "the songs just made themselves" that is very true. try and make a 15 bar build... see how horrible it makes you feel inside... try and make a 17bar drop... ugh... but 16... woooh... because the beat is gonna drop on the 17th bar... ah.... just like it should.

As far as structure goes... listen to deadmau5... he makes his music like a metronome. Look at a song of his inside Ableton and chop it up into Intro, Verse 1, drop, chrous etc etc do that to other songs... you'll figure it out soon enough.

By layed out do you mean mixed? Okay export the final mixdown... reload your daw and load the track. add an EQ, Multiband Compressor, and a Limiter...

The quality you hear is perceived quality... i.e. the more consistent the volume and "better" it sounds to your brain. So the trick here is to sacrifice some of the dynamic range for volume...

I used to wonder this too. The trick here is developing your own. Make shortcuts for youself. for example:

Sort through you samples and find all the kicks that you like and think sound amazing, instead of having them all scattered.

Create instrument templates if you have complex routing for your drums etc etc so it doesn't take you 5 min to set it all up when you start. So when the urge to be creative comes, you can spend your energy being creative, and not setting up.

Now there are going to be people who say... no don't do that... blah blah you'll be less creative.

It really depends on what kind of person you are. Do you need structure to be productive? or are you a freebird...

I lay my tracks out in columns and keep things together. usually something like

audio 1, audio 2... just for extras or whatever to try things.
vocals/midi vocals
drums --- 16 channels all with their own sends etc
synths - depends on tracks but bass, lead, rise, fx

i color code everything, label everything like intro drums, verse drum...

and i work in sections... but i'm not sure if that's the way the pros do it. just what i've developed through trial and error.

I vote for specific skills ... there aren't that much legit Reason tutorials out there ... compared to all the Ableton ones

i for one would love it if you were to do some youtube tutorials. it'd be great to see how you start out a song - not necessarily for the creative aspect, but for how you go about setting levels, eq'ing, compressing from the start.

thanks!

also, in general, do you find yourself drastically eq'ing your synths? i know you use primarily reason, do you find that its equalizer gives you enough control?

i would love to see a tutorial on your mixdown process. i just want to see how to progress on my mixing skills with the limited equipment i have.
and do you do your own mastering or does someone else handle it for you?

Actually....Both would be awesome! That would give us the best idea of how you work, and how we might be able to play around with our own tracks.

That would be amazing. It's always so helpful when you can actually see what is going on.
