PRODUCTION TIPS + HELP + QUESTIONS
« Thread started on: Nov 9th, 2009, 6:22pm »

On my blog ( http://felixcartal.com/ ) I've had a lot of great feedback for my in-depth descriptions on some of my tracks. So I thought it would be a good idea to open it up on the message board and get more of a dialogue going for any questions people may have for anything I've done in my songs, anything you're trying to achieve in your own tracks, or any advice you can offer other people as well. I will do my best to answer any specific questions to me here, but I want everyone on the board who feels like they can contribute to do so! More heads are better than one!

So ask away!

I have lots of questions, I don't expect you to answer them all but producing is all I ever think about so they've been building up. I guess this will get the ball rolling anyway.

What are the general settings you use for your compressor/limiter on your master, and at what volume do your tracks generally sit at before mastering? Is there any specific volume you start at with your kick?

Also, what did you do the lead in Drone to make it sit so well? How often do you apply EQ and compression to your leads and to what extent? Are there specific settings with your sidechain you always start with or is it different with every song?

I'll try to help with questions in this thread as well. I'm a better songwriter then producer right now but I know my way around.

Hey felix, thanks for making a thread like this! The professional help is very much appreciated.

I have heard some things around the boards about WAVES plugins and NI's Komplete, which dont get talked about much. As a beginner I would like to know your professional view on such software, and if it is even a good time investment to learn all this for electro type of music. And hell, wtf do most of these even do (WAVES mercury package has like a million plugins that I dont know what they do)?

Thanks for any input.

I'm not sure what kind of input Felix wants from people on this thread. But if you post this question the the Making Electronic Music Thread I'd be glad to answer your question also.

Yea I was unsure, but Felix did say he would help and anyone else can too, so go ahead and answer it here if you can.

I added it here too because it is about producing, at least I think so?

I keep compression on the master track fairly low to start (I will re-adjust at the very end of the track), but I always throw a compressor on the bass synth itself once i've added it in with the kick.
The kick, I keep it fairly loud right off the bat. In fairness, the volume i start with will usually be the same at the end of the track.

I'm going to do an in-depth post about how I made 'Drone' on my blog sometime in the next week, and hopefully i can answer your questions about that track there.

Personally, I've never used either so I'm not an expert on them. My views on software for beginners is pick a couple things, stick with them, and learn them really well. You're way better off knowing 3 programs really well, rather than 12 half-assed.

As for plugins, they are just ways of modifying the way things sound, reverb, delays, mods, these are all plugins. Usually after using a few in certain programs you'll develop favourites and from there you can hone in on it and make it sound the way YOU want, and make it sound like YOU, not the plugin itself.

If anyone has experience with Komplete or WAVES plugins and can offer more help, please feel free to add to this...

It's a computer. Not a real person. Highly treated with distortion and reverb.

Funny, waves and komplete are pretty much the only plugins I use. Most people regard them as the best plugins in the world, and it's really hard to argue with that. Unluckily for you they have a pretty steep learning curve and waves has tons of goofy shit in the mercury bundle that's just going to make you confused and frustrated rather then creative and productive. I'd recommend learning on something a bit more beginner friendly, like the stock ableton plugins or reason. That's what I learned on and they're all still great to use, nothing wrong with it.

If you really wanna know about them though.. why don't you just read the manual? In waves just click on the question mark in the top right of any plugin and the manual will pop up. Komplete has the manuals in the install folder I believe. Like Al says, manuals are the roadmap to get what's in your head onto the computer screen.

Todd is right about this. They are considered the "cadillac" of plugins... I grew to like the PSP suite too... not nearly as many... but they have some great pluins also... Prob. best known for the vintage warmer...

The go to plugin for almost every producer in the waves bundle is the renaissance bass... the "R" Bass... if you are going to get any of the plugins get that... it's amazing.

But having a wide collection of plugins isn't a bad idea... they all have the same basic functionality + or - certain features. Each will produce a different sound though... a "color" difference... some people digg waves... some digg others... just try them and see what you like and what sounds good...

I've been learning to use only operator, is this a good idea? I have no other plugins right now.
